What is an architectural elevation?

An architectural elevation is like a flat picture of a building’s side. Imagine standing directly in front of a building and taking a perfectly straight photo without any perspective—what you’d see is basically the elevation.

🔹 Types of elevations:

  • Front Elevation → How the building looks from the front (main entrance side).
  • Rear Elevation → How it looks from the back.
  • Left & Right Side Elevations → Show the other two sides.

🔹 What it shows:

  • Wall heights and lengths
  • Windows, doors, balconies, stairs
  • Materials (brick, glass, wood, etc.)
  • Roof shape and slope
  • Sometimes surrounding ground level

🔹 Why it’s important:

  • To visualize the design before building
  • To get approvals from authorities
  • To guide construction workers on sizes, placements, and finishes

Think of plans as the view from above (like a map), while elevations are the view from the side.
